Picked up some interesting stats and comments on mobile learning from Nicole Fougere over at Litmos who is attended Judy Brown’s Mobile Learning session at DevLearn09.

1–From Brown: “One thing Mobile learning is not: “It is not about shrinking a course down to a little screen”.

2–Brown’s definition of mobile learning: ” done on a device which fulfils these criteria: 1–Full battery for the day; 2–Instant on; 3–You’re used to using it”

3–From Brown: “Laptops aren’t mobile devices because the interactions with it are no different to those with your PC.

4–Some mobile research results so far point towards the future of mobile learning being bigger than expected. Everything from mobile ESL classes which as you can imagine are very accessible for a taxi driver with spare time during the day, classes, augmented reality role play environments for work experience.

5–The Merrill Lynch study mentioned deployed three pilot compliance courses and the results showed:

  • Scores were higher on mobile
  • Courses were completed in 45% less time
  • 100% of the participants wanted more

6–Finally,  Brown mentioned stats from Morgan Stanley presentation – an AT&T study shows that there has been a 4932% increase in mobile data traffic in the past 3 years (!), and the download of eBooks has now surpassed that of games.
